MercyOne Eastern Iowa President Recognized for Supporting Fellow Military and Veterans | Local News

DUBUQUE — MercyOne Eastern Iowa President Kay Takes has won the Patriot Award for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, after being nominated for her commitment to supporting fellow military and veterans.

The award recognizes supervisors appointed by a guard or reservist employee for support provided directly to the nominator.

Captain Allison Mass, an Army reservist and psychiatric nurse at MercyOne, nominated Takes for the award.

“The CEO of the hospital where I work not only has the highest honor and respect for employees who are military and veterans, but also for the community,” Mass said. “She has taken the initiative to go above and beyond with her passion for military and veterans by being instrumental in an initiative called MercyOne Military and Veterans Health Care. This prepares personnel to provide high quality care. quality, compassionate, and culturally competent, with honor to all who are either veterans or military members. Kay is a passionate advocate for military members and veterans to ensure personnel are trained to best respond to health issues and to the unique challenges of the military community.

Iowa ESGR Military Outreach Director Rick Ernst surprised Takes with the award.

“I am deeply touched by this award. As employers and health care providers, we can’t just talk about our commitment to veterans and those serving in the military, we must act on it. Through MercyOne Military and Veterans Health Care, we have systems in place to allow us to identify and know veterans and military personnel so that we are better equipped to meet their unique health care needs. We owe it to them to create an environment that honors their service and sacrifice,” she said.

Also takes signed a Letter of Commitment on behalf of MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center to ESGR, an office of the Department of Defense, which promotes cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component service members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military engagement.
