A new definition of value arrives in the Gem State! Dollar General has just announced plans to expand into its 47th state with the addition of a store in Athol, Idaho. The location is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in spring 2022.
The low-cost chain sells a range of goods, including basic necessities and beauty products, but has recently stepped up its commitment to become a destination for cheap and healthy food and supplies.

In July 2021, Dollar General estimated that about 75% of all Americans lived within five miles of one of its 17,000+ stores. Adding cough and cold medicine, dental items, other medical and health aids, feminine hygiene products and fresh produce to these stores would give millions of people, soon including Idahoans, access to those items that they might not normally have.
Here’s what Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and development Dan Nieser said about the expansion into a Press release:
“Dollar General is committed to helping customers save time and money on everyday essentials, and we look forward to bringing our convenience and value to Idaho shoppers… We look forward to welcome new customers to our first Idaho store when the project is completed early next year. and continue to serve clients and communities through our mission to serve others. “
Of the 17,000+ Dollar Generals, Texas alone has over 1,600 individual locations. After the chain’s Idaho site opens next year, only Montana, Alaska and Hawaii will remain without a store.
This expansion is part of the chain’s 2021 goal of adding 1,050 new units following year-over-year sales growth. In 2020, it also opened 1,000 new stores, renovated 1,670 existing stores and closed 67, according to Supermarket news.
