Womack Army Medical Center plans exercise with large number of casualties

Womack Army Medical Center will hold a mass casualty drill next week, officials said.

The preparedness and response exercise is taking place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Medical Center’s main campus near Reilly Road.

In the past, the formation has mimicked aircraft crashes, artillery crashes, active shooters, and possible chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive attack.

Patients can see and/or hear the responses of the many wounded from various departments at Womack Army Medical Center, officials said.

“Unfortunately, due to the world we live in, we need to be prepared for many challenges today,” said a press release from the medical center. “This planned event is just one of many that (Womack Army Medical Center) is responsible for organizing for the safety of our patients, healthcare providers and staff.”

Officials said the exercise will not affect outlying clinics, the Womack Health and Support Center, the Blood Donor Center, the Intrepid Spirit Center or the Fayetteville Rehabilitation Clinic.
